I have tried to make these installation instructions as simple as possible.
If your sampler does not look like the one below, don't even attempt the upgrade steps because the chances are that you don't have an Akai S3200XL sampler.
Take time during this 10 step process. Rushing could mean you end up ruining your sampler and/or your EPROM's..
Step 1 - Unplug all connections - especially the power !
Observe anti-static precautions by using a wrist strap (if you have one) or by making sure that you earth yourself before handling electronic components. You can do this by touching a radiator or similar pipework before commencing.
Step 2 - Remove the cover - 5 screws in total (don't forget the small screw at the back)
Step 3 - Locate the existing OS EPROM (Circled in RED in the photo)
It will normally have a sticker over the EPROM window
Step 4 - Get better access to the device by removing effect and filter boards....
Step 5 - Now gently remove the existing EPROM.
Ideally use an IC extraction tool (about £4 from RS).
A flat bladed screwdriver can be used by prising between the EPROM and it's socket gently rocking at both ends to free the device.
Be very careful not to damage the EPROM, it's pins, the socket or the main board during this process.
Step 6 - Remove the EPROM from it's socket and store safely.
Be careful when handling the EPROM's, they are sensitive to static electricity and the legs are easy to bend and can snap off.
Step 7- Insert the new EPROM into the socket.
Make sure the EPROM is the correct way around. The notch at the top of the EPROM should be closest to the socket pin number 1.
In this case, the EPROM notch is facing away from the disk drive bay's.
Make sure that pins do not slip outside or inside the socket when pushing the device into the socket.
Don't force the EPROM home, gentle pressure evenly over the device is all that's needed.
Step 8 - Replace filter and effects boards
Step 9- Replace the cover
Step 10 - Reconnect the power only - don't connect drives, scsi devices or have floppies inserted at this stage.
Power up and you should see the message below (memory dependant of course) - the 'OPERATING SYSTEM 2.00' is the important bit.
That's it your all finished !
If you don't see the message (or any message at all) , you've done something wrong ! - check the following...
1. You do actually have an Akai S3200XL sampler - not a sampler that has a similar name or looks almost the same.
2. Double check that the EPROM is located the correct way around (See step 7).
3. Double check that all pins of the EPROM are located into the socket and that you have not broken any.
4. Double check that you have pushed the EPROM home properly
