Didn’t get the level of satisfaction that Stephen Fry got when he just opened the box on his (see here)

Picture of me grinnng like an idiot while fiddling with the iPad.

I think the recent spat of patent infringment claims (Nokia -> Apple -> HTC) is a real indication of Apples concern about the challenges to the iPhone and forthcoming iPad.

Popular opinion is that Apple is trying to get at Google through HTC, perhaps perceived as a softer target. Part of me agrees with this but I also belve that Apple is concerned about the pace of HTC’s innovation in the smart phone marketplace. Who knows, but possibly there is concern about HTC’s innovation in the area of slate or tablet computing. With a plethora of tablet devices expected to be available in the markeplace by the end of 2010, there may not be time for Apple to get a foothold with its iPad to be released this month.

So apple have launched an updated Mac Pro with four and eight core options.

I’m confused.

The previous basic eight core (dual quad 2.8Ghz Harpertown based Xeon) here in the UK was selling for around £1800.

See here at amazon.co.uk

or here an amazon.com

So why are the new eight core (dual quad Nehalem based Xeon) processors now costing at least £2499 from Apple UK (see here)

Looks like a significant price INCREASE to me – is there a real performance gain from the new processor and graphics card configuration ?

I’m going to have to hold off taking the plunge until someone else has carried out the performance test comparisons and provided some insight into the value of a £700 price hike.
